Joseph Patrick Beck, 50, of Stamford passed away after a battle with cancer.

Joe was born in Woodside at Physician’s Hospital of Queens on March 27, 1955.

Joe was an active athlete, playing football and wrestling for Wantagh High School, where he graduated in 1973. In his later education days he attended SUNY Delhi and SUNY Brockport with bachelor’s degrees in elementary education and earth sciences. He later received his master’s in administration from the College of Saint Rose in Albany.

In September 1974, Joe met Patricia Burnett of Cooperstown, and they married July 7, 1979, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown.

In September 1979, Joe started his first teaching job at South Kortright Central School, where he taught an array of grades and subjects and coached girls varsity softball over his 10 years there. Joe was awarded Coach of the Year in 1985 and 1987.

From 1989-1993, Joe switched gears to administration, becoming an assistant superintendent of Stamford Central School. He became superintendent of schools at Gilboa-Conesville in 1993, where he remained until he returned to Stamford as superintendent of schools in 2001.

As much as his services to many committees, boards, and organizations was a large part of his life, more so was his devotion to his students and his love for his family.

Joe always had an extreme love for the ocean, an affinity that his entire family shared with him. Being at the beach with friends and family was his heaven, but he also enjoyed hunting in the fall and winter, when he truly appreciated the beauty of the Catskills.

His love for his job, community, and especially his students will be missed by everyone who knew him.

One of Joe’s greatest professional accomplishments and experiences happened only a few months ago when a crazy idea to bring every single student of SCS to the Bronx Zoo on chartered buses was approved, with help by a grant from CROP and the support of the school board. It was by far the happiest day in his educational career.

Joe is survived by his wife, Patty, of 26 years; his daughters, Meaghan, 21, Laura, 16, and Tara (Rosie), 15; his mother, Mary Jane (Donahue) Beck, and his father, Edmon of Menandes. He also is survived by his five brothers and sisters: his brother, Edmund and wife Rita of Shirley, sister, Jane, and husband Dr. Thomas Cappiello, Wantagh, Mary Kramarchyk and husband Andrew, brother Thomas, wife Valerie, Mays Landing, N.J., sister Kathleen and husband Greg Stever; and by several nieces and nephews; and his beloved Labrador, Duke.

There will be no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Michael Cournoyer, at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2005, at the Stamford Central School gym. After the services, there will be an open invitation to celebrate Joe’s life with a “snow day” party at the Beck’s.

Contributions in his memory may be made to a scholarship fund at the Stamford Central School, Stamford, NY 12167.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.
