William James Newburgh, who served in the U.S. Navy and lived in Lake Ronkonkoma, died on Jan. 6.

Known to friends as Jimmy, Newburgh passed in peace, Sunday, January 6, 2019.

Jimmy was born in New York City to Edna and William Newburgh Sr. After Edna’s untimely death, Jimmy was raised by his step-mother, Peggy Newburgh who adored him and his late sister, Mary Jane Vanderhyde.

He will be remembered each day by his son, James Newburgh and wife Janet, daughter, Justine D’Antonio and husband Arturo, his two grandsons, and his sister, Peggy Sheehy. A graduate of Wantagh High School, Jimmy joined the U.S. Navy in 1968, and was stationed in Rota, Spain, where he served as a Machinist for the USS Holland. After his honorable discharge, he became a machinist for BNL’s NSLS.

Jimmy loved his Lab family and leaves many devoted friends who will miss his easy grin, and his kind nature. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Friday, January 11, 10am at St. Joseph Church, 45 Church Street, Ronkonkoma, NY.Subscribe

A celebration of his life will be Thursday, January 10, at Forrester Maher Funeral Home, 998 Portion Road, Ronkonkoma, NY, 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm. Happiest with family or friends, Jimmy loved to be on his boat or the golf course, or playing with his grandchildren. In his own quiet way, he won the hearts of all who knew him.
