August 8, 1941 ~ January 6, 2024

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Robert Charles Harter, 82, on January 6, 2024. Robert was born on August 8, 1941, in Mount Vernon, NY to Louis and Adele (Meyer) Harter. He grew up in Wantagh, NY, and lived most of his life on Cedar Swamp Creek in Bellmore, NY.

Robert was predeceased by his beloved wife, Harriet (Lorenzen) Harter, and was the loving father of Lisa (David) Tubbs and Christian (Lynne, Robert, and Ashley), cherished grandfather of Sarah, Madeline and Kathryn Tubbs, and dear brother of Ron (Diane) Harter.

He served honorably in the U.S. Navy, achieving Pipefitter (Steamfitter) Petty Officer 2nd Class. He was a machinery mover and rigger for 28½ years at Bornholdt Machinery Movers. During that time, he and his brother Ron built the 43’ steel fishing vessel “Puffin.” He then “retired” and built the 47’ “North Sea” with his brother and son. He was a commercial fisherman until 2004 of the waters off Long Island to the continental shelf. When he wasn’t reading adventure novels, he was enjoying all that the Great South Bay, Montauk, and Freeport have to offer. He was always at home breathing in the salty air and watching the waves crash at Jones Beach.

Friends and family may visit Friday, January 12; 1-3PM and 5-8PM at Wantagh Abbey 3374 Park Avenue, Wantagh, NY. Religious service is on Friday at the funeral home at 7PM followed by private cremation.
