Ronald Adam Cliszis Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Coach, and Friend

Ronald Adam Cliszis passed away on October 17, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and dedication. He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Judy; his son Matt and daughter-in-law Pam; and his cherished grandchildren, Alexa and Ben.

Born in Brooklyn and raised in Bethpage, Ron made Merrick his home for the past 52 years. He spent 34 years shaping young minds and inspiring athletes as a teacher and basketball coach at Wantagh Junior and Senior High Schools. His impact on students and players alike was profound and enduring.

A passionate athlete, Ron was involved with sports throughout his whole life – from high school sports to Division I golf at St. John’s University. He remained an avid golfer throughout his life and his time on the course was the most special to him – with his buddies, and most recently with his grandkids. His enthusiasm for the game was matched only by his unwavering loyalty to his favorite teams—the Yankees, Giants, Knicks and Rangers.

Ron was the life of every gathering, known for his infectious energy, quick wit, and deep friendships. He embraced life fully, bringing joy to those around him and creating memories that will be treasured forever.

His spirit lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made in his memory to the New York chapter of The First Tee, an organization he loved with a mission to empower youth through character development and life skills using the game of golf.

  1. This news saddens me and brings a smile to my face at the same time.As a 1976 WHS graduate Coach C was my 8th grade basketball and made the name Muddy Waters stick as my nickname all through my high school years and still to this day . His line was that move was as smooth as Mud. I would later run into him after I graduated and always had great conversations with him. Like I said I ll certainly miss him but always remember him. RIP coach

  2. I was also a 1976 graduate of WHS. (Hi Joe.)
I was dragged out of Brooklyn to move to Wantagh in the Christmas break during eighth grade, and I was not happy about being there, but I was tall, so I was invited to play on the 7th/8th grade basketball team, coached by Mr. Cliszis. I had a bit of a foul mouth in those days, and coach always made people run when they cursed. One time (of many times) I probably missed a layup or some other shot, and cursed, and was told to run. Coach Cliszis asked me, when I was done, what I thought about it, and I told him it sucked. He made me run again. This was my first social interaction in town, and he and the team made me feel very welcome. He was a great guy and he will be missed. Jamie Brickell
